SHOULD - Be Done!

I used to “should” on myself constantly.

Shifting that was one of the first things I used EFT Tapping to resolve. To “be done” with shoulding.

Yes, it made me sensitive to my own shoulds. It made me SUPER sensitive to others shoulding on me.

The freedom… delicious.

I still do anything and everything that I’m aligned with. If it matters to me, I do it. Not because I should… because my Being knows it’s my choice.

Now, I wanted to share another person’s potent perspective on should’s and their own choice to be done with them…

No good comes from the word “should.”

It’s a word rooted in negativity, guilt, and pressure.

More often than not, it leads us down paths that won’t take us where we want to go.

I’ve made a conscious effort stop using the word and believe the less we use it or allow ourselves to be influenced by it, the better off we’ll be.

Here’s why…

Should is based on the expectations of others.

The belief we “should” do or be something is rooted in other people’s expectations – not our own.

When we think we should do something it’s because our family, friends, or society has convinced us it’s the right thing to do.

But it’s often not something we actually want to do.

If it was, we’d refer to it as something we want to do instead of as something we should do.

Should comes from guilt.

When we say we should do something, it’s another way of expressing that whatever we’ve chosen to do isn’t enough.

It belittles our choices.

Should is critical. It creates pressure.

And breeds insecurity.

Should is judgmental.

While should is a bad word to use with regard to our own actions, it’s equally dangerous to use when directed at others.

When we tell others what they should do, we extend our judgment on to them.

Just like others have no business telling us what to do, the opposite is also true.

We don’t know what others should do, so there’s no reason to use a word that suggests otherwise.

Should is an illusion.

There are plenty of reasons to be wary of the word should, but this might be the most important one:

Should doesn’t exist.

There’s no such thing as a single way we should live our life or do our job.

There are results we hope to achieve and goals we want to attain, but there are infinite ways to do so.

There’s no one path we “should” follow, so we can stop speaking and acting as if there is.

Or at least we can try.

Good insights. But how do we reframe the tasks that need to be done? Like taking care of a child or finishing an office assignment. It has to be done.

Reframe.

And psychologically, this DOES matter.

“I HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF THIS CHILD.”
There’s an implied threat. An or else spoken and conscious or not.

Same child same situation: “This child matters to me, and while I might have other preferences for my focus and energy right now, they matter to me, I care, and I’m the type of person who takes care of those who I am stewarding to a thriving life in adulthood. So, yes, OF COURSE I am going to change that diaper and prepare them a nourishing meal!”

Office situation: “This business and I have agreements, for me to be of service to them and they will pay me. I’m going to do this assignment as part of that agreement because I have integrity and I value the money I get from this. Of course, i am free to quit, and I’m even free to continue to upgrade my thriving by seeking different engagements or starting my own business. For right now, completing this assignment is what matters to my short term NOW.”

Can you feel the ENERGY difference in the reframe?

People who drive themselves with SHOULD and “has to be done” are using expensive adrenaline and stress cortisol to do the work. Those that frame the same exact situations through the lens of CHOICE activate their core energy in a different way.

It’s palpable – meaning we can train ourselves to notice and feel the difference. And be thriving now and onwards by realizing how free we actually are.

That’s my walk. Even when I do sometimes tumble.

That’s beautiful reframing Rick. Thanks.
